Building and fixing have been a part of my life as long as I can remember. I grew up “helping” my father as he renovated and improved our home and the homes of friends and family. As time went on I was able to actually help and develop some practical skills. I especially enjoyed shadowing my dad in the wood shop and dabbled in carving and scroll saw work throughout my childhood and high school years. Shortly thereafter I met a girl and began making simple things: boxes, stool, archway etc. As it happened, she was impressed enough to marry me and we moved to Wadsworth to be the caretakers at a church camp.
It was there, as you may have guessed, that I had the opportunity and necessity to participate in the full spectrum of building and maintenance projects. Simultaneously, I also got more involved in woodworking and moved on to “Amish” style hardwood furniture and built-in cabinetry for myself/friends/family. Amazingly, the camp is only a part time job, so I have also worked a few different places along the way. First at a car wash, then a cabinet and store fixture workshop and finally for the City of Medina. It was while working part time in the city forestry department that I acquired my arborist certification and went on to become the city arborist.
Now, I had mused from time to time for years of starting my own woodworking business, but never thought it was either practical or prudent. But it was during my time as arborist that a relative of mine (thanks, sis!) recommended that I widen my view. I soon realized that she was right, I could use my experience to help people with more than just furniture making. Et voila, TLC Handyman Service was born! And, yes, my wife and I are still at the camp; now with five of our own not-quite-helpers.
